SPEECH AND DRAMA
All students are actively encouraged to participate in Speech and Drama in the Presentation as part of their education. Speech and Drama develops confidence, self-esteem, social skills and creativity. It provides opportunities for students to experience the world from perspectives outside their own.
All 1st and 2nd year students have Speech and Drama (SPD) as part of their curriculum. 1st year students participate in a module of speech and drama which is an introduction to Drama, Poetry Recital and Speaking in Public. There is a performance at the end of each module. 2nd year students take SPD for one period a week where they continue to develop their communication skills through Public Speaking, Reading Aloud and Acting Skills. In transition year students have speech and drama for two periods each week where they participate in theatre games, acting, public speaking and presentation skills. They also participate in Drama workshops facilitated by Waterford Youth Arts.
All students have the opportunity to enter Speech and Drama examinations with the London Academy for Music and Dramatic Art (L.A.M.D.A.), and the Leinster School of Music and Drama. They participate in a variety of exams, Verse and Prose, Public Speaking, Choral Speaking and Acting. Students enjoy great success in these exams and many proceed to Gold Medal level.
Senior Students participate in a variety of Inter Schools competitions such as :
Debating with Concern Ireland and the Philosophical Society
Public Speaking with Mental Health Ireland and the Soroptomists Society
Poetry Recital in the Poetry Aloud Competition organised by the National Library of Ireland.
Students have enjoyed success at all levels of these competitions.
